Magic 8 Ball
Nothing came to us with a secret brief for their new phone release.
In just a few weeks, wrapped in mystery, we worked side by side with their team to design and build something new for the Glyph Matrix, a pixel interface that speaks from the back of the phone.
The result is the Magic 8 Ball, part of Glyph Toys: a collection of micro-experiences that make the device feel alive and playful. 🎱

When light becomes language
Light is no longer just a tool, it becomes the voice.
With the Glyph Matrix, light isn’t decoration. It’s a way to communicate with the user.
A system of signals, patterns, and animations that speaks without words.
A deliberately simple interface, designed to show only the essentials.
All at a glance, without the need to unlock the phone.
Fewer distractions, more meaning.

The evolution of the glyph interface
From the very beginning, the Glyph Interface made Nothing phones instantly recognizable.
A glow that stood out even from a distance.
It was a signature, part of their identity.
The idea was to create a calmer, more mindful way to use technology.
Light signals instead of checking the screen.
Simple cues instead of constant notifications.
Over time, the interface has been refined and pushed further.
With the new Glyph Matrix, that idea evolves again and becomes more expressive.

Make tech fun again
Some see it as a gimmick. But that’s missing the point.
Most products today are designed to make you feel no emotion.
The Glyph Matrix was designed not only for utility, but also for play.
Glyph Toys are small experiences that live inside the Glyph Matrix.
Little moments that surprise, entertain and give the phone a soul.
They remind us that technology doesn’t have to be only serious or functional.
It can be fun. It can bring joy. It can be human.

All eyes on it
The Magic 8 Ball didn’t go unnoticed.
Wired, The Guardian, and Wallpaper all mentioned it in their coverage of Phone (3), highlighting it as one of the most playful uses of the new Glyph Matrix.
Even MKBHD, the most influential tech creator on YouTube, featured it in his video, calling it “cool.”

Community is the moat
Nothing has always built with its community, inviting designers, developers and other creatives to shape what technology can feel like.
Co-creation is their real moat. Projects born from collaboration, not just top-down design.
We had worked together before, but this was the first time we co-created for a device ahead of launch.
